McCOURTNEY RECREATION

McCourtney Road recreation includes North Star Power House and Pelton Wheel Mining Exhibit, considered by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to be one of the most diverse displays of hard-rock mining equipment in the US. The museum building was the North Star Mine Powerhouse, powered solely by Pelton wheel — the link between the waterwheel and the modern generator.

The original 30 ft Pelton wheel, the largest in the world, is on display along with a stamp mill and a working Cornish pump used to draw water out of mine shafts.

The museum has a secluded picnic area; just walk across the bridge that crosses Wolf Creek. The 100-acre Nevada County Fairgrounds with its more than 3,000 trees is the site of almost daily activity, especially during the spring, summer, and fall when events of all kinds take place. The Nevada County Fair, a true down-home county fair, attracts thousands over a week in the late summer and other events range from classical music concerts to home shows, food and wine events, draft horse exhibitions, Celtic Festival, World Music Festival, and a seasonal farmers market.

A small 4.5-acre lake offers fishing for children 12 and under and there are shaded camping sites for trailers and motor homes.
